The Layover
You can say that we are deliberately tackling a tired and well worn format for the sheer challenge of seeing if we can make it interesting and possibly even useful. We are well aware that many of the meals and experiences on No Reservations are, frankly, impossible to duplicate. The upcoming last meal at El Bulli show being a particularly extreme example. The crew and I got drunk one night and said, “hey, let’s make Samantha Brown’s show! Only….different…and good! ” unlike No Rez, you will actually be able to do the stuff covered on the show. And unlike other shows of the genre, you might actually want to. We were very pleased with the techniques show—which was also a very classic, well travelled and restrictive format. We managed to make that fun and interesting and put our own stamp on it. So why not this? It’s faster, more democratic and more caffeinated than No Rez. But just as obnoxious.

Hey, I noticed in tonight Hong Kong layover you carry a shoulder bag that has a very thin strap that will cut into your body as your bag gets heavier. If you do have a bag with D-rings replace that strap with the following and your shoulders will thank you. http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/ACC/TB0505
I all the time download a complete show in parts, that’s always present at YouTube, as my net connection is very slow and YouTube fulfils my needs.
Dear Mr Bourdain. How very much I enjoyed "No Reservations". I know for you and your crew it took a great deal of time and effort. I enjoyed learning about the places and food of your travels. Perhaps that is why you have chosen to do a somewhat different show.I am sorry to say, in my opinion, "Layover" is a big Adam Richman Pigout. I really did appreciate and enjoyed learning about all your adventerous places which made me want to visit. However,I am sure it is tiring for you and crew to be gone so much of ther year. Should you choose to take on anothe "No Reservation-type"show, maybe not for a whole week; there are still places to visit for new adventures, South Africa, more Alaska, Many of the US states and Canada… I also enjoy very much all your books. Am on to one of your novels next, just for fun. Sincerely, K.H.
K.H. I agree with your assessment.
Terrific facts thankfulness for posting about it. In reality in all of content of this blog you will find things to educate yourself on.
Does anyone know what camera is being shot on "The Layover" Panasonic 100? canon 7D?
I have been a huge fan of no reservations and have watched every episode. Could only stomach half of the Italy edition of the layover. The show sucks as Tony has lost touch with the common person. The show has him walking through the footprints of the commoner as a star. The old Tony was a commoner that walked through all of these destinations as a commoner. He was often smoking ,drinking ,and cursing as many of us would.
San Francisco!
The layover show was all very entertaining, but seriously
Corona Beer?
How about some local suds
If I am in San Francisco, the last thing I would want to eat is a cheese burger!!! Or drink at a bar all day. The show did not do San Francisco justice!
Sorry Gray, didn't mean to make my comment a repy, meant it to be an individual comment.
You went to the Toranado bar on Haight street on a Tuesday and didn't go next door to Rosmude for THE best cheese burger on the planet? Cheeseburger Tusday always has a line before 11:00am!
I enjoyed 'No Reservations' but I like 'Layover' better. SF was disappointing because a cheeseburger would be the last thing I would want to eat if in San Francisco. Or drink in a bar all day/night. I liked the Thailand Layover, so far my favorite! Looking forward to more!
Sondra, I couldn't agree more. I watch Bourdain whenever I can. I enjoy his antics. But, with so many stimulating venues in "The City", (not frisco) to watch Bourdain try to talk and gesture after drowning in garbage drinks was disgusting. Also, I really don't enjoy watching the omnipresent "bleeps" which he seems to revel in. Once in a while it creates interest. But it has become juvenile. "Layover" needs to be rethunk and reformatted if it expects to last. It's becoming, yes Tony, a BORE.
Last two shows AB has done in (frisco) natives do call it that. They didnt go to all the real places natives eat . I meen cmon your in the mission and you eat chinese?really?hit a native up if you ever want a real tour of frisco. Sincerly. Chris. Born and raised in FRISCO!!!!
I'm still catching up on my DVR'd selections after getting behind over the holidays.
Just saw the Amsterdam episode and once again, I need to take the time to make a correction.
Our host pronounced Leidseplein: "Leedus-pline"
May someone should have asked Frederic (or anyone else in the show) to do a quick tutorial.
Plein is easy. There are lots of them and it's comparable to piazza.
But if the 'ei' is pronounced as an 'i' there (last vowel in the pair gets the nod.)
Why wouldn't be that way as well with the "Leidse"???
The best phonetic description of the way my Amsterdamer family pronounces it is: 'Light-se-pline.'
Since I watch eagerly and am trusting that I'm getting good advice,
please be more diligent with catching these sort of glaring content gaffs in the future.
Thank you.
I consider 'No Reservations' one of the few things on TV worth watching. 'The Layover' is good and I will watch, but I like 'No Reservations' better. It's faster and more to the point. I've watched some episodes twice, while I have skiped though some parts of 'The Layover'. Although it should be noted that I'm not a big fan of drug cities like San Francisco or Amsterdam.
nice article, i just finished bookmarking it for future reference. i would love to read on future posts. how do i configure the rss again? thanks!

Tony, I am a fan of the show… love your banter.. Like "The Layover a LOT" Was waiting and waiting for you to mention Molinare's and son of a bith… you did exactly what we have done for years… stopped at Molinare;s for a sandwich on your way out of town. A thing of beauty. People that are offended by you don't realize that you are the real-life incarnation of Peter Pan. The fictional Peter pan had no specific skills and didn't work his ass off and you don't fly anymore. I think that off camera you are probably a softspoken and introspective fellow who does not seek attention. I may be wrong… The main thing is that like so many others I have gotten to live a different life vicariously through your show and not endanger the 5 stents I already have in my heart as it is. Viva Porchetta!
Keep up the good work… and if I see you on the street I promise I will not recognize you.
P.S. Kudos to your producer, DP and camera crew… the pickup shots are superb… Getting better and better.
Of all the comments above, the one that nails things is the wit who wrote that you jumped the shark, 'and made him your bitch!'
M. Bourdain, you have truly done beautiful work with your most recent offering, The Layover. As regards the places that you have visited and I have not (yet), you have given me plenty of new places to go and things to do.
But as one who has lived in L.A. for the last forty or so years, you have nailed the things that can and should be done in this crazy place. You had me when you praised In-N-Out Burger, a truly inspired local tradition (and a place where you can actually get good burgers, made to order), and the hits just kept on coming. You have also accomplished the amazing feat of giving me several new places for me to go.
As Schumann wrote of Chopin, "Hats off, Gentlemen: a genius!"
The rest of you morons who have panned Tony can go and do naughty things with yourself. Preferably out of the public view.
Tony, I am a huge fan and long time LA resident. Related to your layover show in LA and recommendation of Kokekokko. I have eaten there twice since the show aired and the owner (he also works the charcoal grill) treats his employees like garbage. This is the opposite of what you stand for. Although the food is great, he runs his employees with an iron fist and they run around the restaurant understaffed and in fear of his wrath. I have ascertained this through observation and talking to some staff members. I know you always treated your staff well. Thus, I implore all Layover fans to boycott Kokekokko until their Tojo like owner learns to treat his staff with fundamental respect!
Where can i find the Layover Episode from Paris? Its not on youtube, itunes or The Layover app? Why are they treating this episode like a red headed step child?
right? I can't find it anywhere. I swear I watched an episode. Maybe it was just a dream?
Hey Tony, why dont you bring your layover show and your skinny a$$ in the boggie down Bronx NY, unless your yellow!!!
