Quick, how far is Ensenada from La Paz? Well let me tell you kids, Baja is massive and long and filled with a hundred different locales and experiences from the southern tip in the Sea of Cortez to the SoCal border towns that get all the negative pub. And everything in both places, and in between is world class … especially the food. My food radar was on high alert for any signs of disingenuous vibes, but this unheralded region of Mexico is an eater’s paradise.
La Paz offered up the best taqueria on the planet, diving for chocolate clams and a day spent on the water with one of the world’s sexiest biologists. Jealous? How about the idea of prowling the streets of Ensenada, a killer food town that has often been misrepresented as a simple way point for cruise liners? Chef Benito Molina and his wife Solange showed me a range of exciting food finds including a day spent shopping the seafood market and cooking geoduck in their restaurant. Seafood coctels on the street gave way to a short haul to Tijuana, and even more surprises. If you think TJ is a danger-filled urban warzone you are reading too many tabloids. My pal Bill Esparza took me on a food crawl that will blow your mind.
So here’s the deal … I could tell you more, but you have to see this show for yourself, it’s one of my fave episodes of the season and a fitting tribute to a state that never gets enough credit. Baja is more than just a handful of resort towns in the south. It’s an amazing and vibrant place with plenty to be discovered by anyone willing to take a peek.
