Florida Keys: Killer Hogfish & Key Lime Pie

July 5, 2011, 4:20 PM  |  Comments (641)  |  Permalink

What? It’s the summer and you’re NOT at the beach? Your toes aren’t tucked away into warm sand? Hard working people of America, take a break, grab a cold one and get mighty comfy.

Tomorrow’s episode  brings the paradise of the Florida Keys to YOU! It’s going to be a culinary adventure with local fishing oddities (can I say “Hogfish”), key lime pie with Vanilla Ice (yes, the rapper), and a visit to the Conch Republic. You’re going to enjoy a feast in the sunniest corner of these United States. A post-July 4th food extravaganza!

Of course, I can’t forget to mention that tomorrow’s contender isn’t your average MvF Nation competitor. In fact, she’s a shy five feet tall. Don’t jump to any conclusions though, with Adam at her side, anything is possible.

Don’t forget to tune in, relax, and soak in the Florida rays.

Stay tasty Nation.

422 Oysters, hold the lemon

Bivalve molluscs, more widely known as oysters, are what’s on the menu in Wednesday night’s Alabama adventure.

While they might not seem like much, these delicious gifts of the sea will pile up. Shuckin’ 422? May the ocean gods be with you.

Don’t miss Adam coaching our lucky competitor, “Big” Joe Evans through this grueling challenge. 60 minutes and more than 400 oysters?! Will this veteran oyster fiend be able to bring the goods to the table? It’s going to be food challenge insanity. If you’re looking to visit the restaurant, follow the link here and fulfill all your own Wintzell Oyster Shuckin’ dreams.

Tune in, watch out – it’s going to be a feast. Travel Channel / 9PM.

Tomorrow’s episode is a feast, Nation.

New Mexico brings a little cowboys, rodeos, and fries. Leave room for the onion rings.

Watch Adam brave the elements and coach three unlikely contestants (one’s a local weatherman) through Albuquerque’s mightiest meal:  the ’Travis On A Silver Platter’. It’s eight pounds of fries, green chili sauce, cheese, beef, pinto bean, and tortilla. A Southwestern behemoth that’ll leave you slack-jawed!

Get the family, call your friends, and tune in tomorrow at 9PM on Travel Channel for another episode of MvFNation! It’s going to be a doozy.

Stay Tasty.

Q&A with Bill Purcell: Nashville’s Ex-Mayor and Hot Chicken Sage

June 14, 2011, 10:02 AM  |  Comments (520)  |  Permalink

Bill Purcell, ex-Mayor of Nashville and supreme authority on Hot Chicken speaks with the MvFN blog for a Q&A.

MvFN Blog: In 1996, the Tennessee House of Representatives, with your help, had Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack declared the best restaurant in Tennessee. What makes Prince’s stand out from the crowd?

Bill: This was one of my last official acts as Majority Leader of the Tennessee House of Representatives before leaving that office in 1996.  It was done by Proclamation as the legislature was not then in session. Fifteen years later it hangs inside Prince’s proudly and undisputed, if perhaps a bit grease splattered.

As mayor of Nashville, you created the Hot Chicken Festival, an accomplishment you have called one of the great legacies of your time in office. You truly seem to love hot chicken, what is the backstory on the festival and the story behind your love of the dish? Finally, how ‘hot’ do you order?

There are an extraordinary number of people and things which make Nashville the special place that it is. Whether you were born here, or brought here, or came here on your own, you know there is no place like Nashville. And no place else has Hot Chicken. It is our indigenous food. And I eat it hot. It is, after all, hot chicken. The Hot Chicken Festival was the culminating event of the Celebrate Nashville activities in recognition of 200 years of Nashville as a city. If you are a member of M v F Nation you already understand why. And you will want to be here on July 4th, 2011 for the Festival.

Curious about last night’s MvF Nation Miracle? Look no further, we’ve got the finer details on Nashville’s finest spicy fried chicken joint: PRINCE’S HOT CHICKEN SHACK

Adam and his adopted Nashville mom 'André Prince'

While there is no confirmed date as to when Prince’s opened, André Prince, the current matriarch of the Prince’s household believes it was around the 1940′s that her great uncle Thornton Prince established the now infamous Shack. As Adam learned in last night episode, the origins of the chicken recipe emerged from a tale of delicious revenge. Thornton Prince, alleged womanizer and owner, came home too late one evening only for his displeased girlfriend of the time to devise and cook him a very ‘special’ fried chicken breakfast. Despite an infusion of mouth napalming extra peppers Thornton failed to take issue and instead urged her to make more in the future. Today, the variety of mild, medium, hot, and extra hot remain a legacy of this fiery revenge story. Now if only revenge could always taste this finger-lickin’ good!
