The 72nd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is now in full gear — and so is the action. From the Black Hills to the Badlands, thousands of motorcyclists have descended on the area to celebrate the freedom of the open road — and maybe set a record or two. This year, stuntman Toby Baker returns to Sturgis to reclaim the Guinness World Record for the longest-running ride through a tunnel of fire. That’s 230 feet, 2,900 degrees. That’s just one of the highlights this week.
With bike week through Sunday, Aug. 12, there’s still time to hit the road — and check out the action. Check out the week’s top events and attractions.
Black Hills Copter Ride
Enjoy a ride above the Black Hills mountaintops, and take in views of the area’s historic towns (Deadwood, Keystone and Custer, among them), as well as top landmarks Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.
Get your game on in Deadwood, 11 miles from Sturgis. The historic town is home to 24/7 gaming and casinos such as The Midnight Star, which touts “progressive” jackpot machines with the potential to win big bucks.
Broken Spoke Beauty Contest
See aspiring models vie for the chance to win $5,000 in the inaugural Miss Broken Spoke Saloon contest — with winners chosen in categories from congeniality to swimsuit. You might even be tapped to help select the winner.
Black Hills to the Badlands
Enjoy scenic rides from the Black Hills to the Badlands. Scenic routes include Interstate 90 (exit at Rapid City and follow US Highway 16 southwest to Keystone and then Highway 244 to Mount Rushmore), Spearfish Canyon and Iron Mountain Road.
