Need another reason to love September? In addition to Indian summer weather, back to school (shopping) and fall weekend getaways, September is National Yoga Month. Celebrate by visiting one of the thousands of studios and organizations all over the country that are offering free yoga classes and events, many of which are outdoors (so you can enjoy the Indian summer while you’re saluting the sun).
Don’t worry if you aren’t a Vinyasa veteran, these events are open to all levels and are the perfect introduction for newbies to experience all the mind and body benefits of yoga, including bringing people together all over the world.
Travel Channel got a head start on this month’s yoga events by attending a Wanderlust festival, one of a series of annual events held all over the country to celebrate yoga, music, art and nature. Now its 4th year, Wanderlust’s popularity is continuing to grow, bringing people together to downward dog by day and dance under the stars by night (take a peek at photos from Wanderlust festivals).
Channel your inner traveling yogi all month long with these events:
Wanderlust Yoga in the City
Missed the Wanderlust festivals this summer? Wanderlust Yoga in the City is a free outdoor yoga event that will take place in LA and NYC on September 9 and in San Francisco on September 23. Acclaimed yoga teaches (Seane Corn, Schuyler Grant and Tommy Rosen) and world-renowned DJs come together to unite yoga communities and celebrate Yoga Aid with 100% of the proceeds going directly to charity.
A Yoga Wave Around the World
On September 9, passionate yogis around the globe will unite “in wave of yoga connectedness” to raise 1 million dollars for charities. Yoga Aid World Challenge seeks to make history with its 24-hour “yoga relay” around the world, beginning with a class in Sydney, then moving through more than 20 countries and 200 events, finally ending with a sundown session in LA. All Yoga Aid World Challenge classes are free, but fundraising through the following designated charities is encouraged: Off the Mat, Into the World, The Africa Yoga Project, Ganga Action and Yoga Across America. Visit yogaaid.com to check out events near you.
A Free Week of Yoga
No matter where you are in September — at home or on the road — you can participate in National Yoga Month all over the US. More than 2,200 studios across the country are participating in National Yoga month and offering a free week of yoga. See what studios in your area are participating at yogahealthfinder.com.
Hotels Cater to the Traveling Yogi
Hotels are also helping travelers keep a yoga lifestyle on the road. The Mirage in Las Vegas has perhaps the most unique offering: Yoga Among the Dolphins. The 60-minute all-levels yoga class will be held in an underwater viewing area within Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. During the month of September, Mirbeau Inn and Spa in the peaceful Finger Lakes is offering complimentary yoga classes from Vinyasa to Aroma Yoga (a class that incorporates essential oils to add to the healing benefits). In addition, Hotel Solamar in San Diego is offering “Vino and Vinyasa,” a complimentary weekly one-hour yoga class followed by a wine social hour. And if yoga and wine aren’t enticing enough, these classes are held on the hotel roof.
And if yoga isn’t your thing, you can still breathe in the early autumn air. Check out our Best Long-Distance Hiking Trails and Top 10 National Park Activities or relax in slightly more unusual ways with our World’s Weirdest Spa Treatments.
