Completed in 1778 after nine years of construction, Alcalá Gate was used not only by residents of Madrid but also to herd flocks of sheep in and out of the city's medieval walls, although it's doubtful the sheep appreciated the beauty of the Neoclassical architecture as much as the flocks of modern day tourists.
