Climb the footpath near the abbey to stand at the top of Sant Jeroni, the area’s highest point, and you can see almost all of Catalonia – or, on a clear day, all the way to Mallorca.

The site of the original modest hermitage of Santa Maria, the monastery has a history going back over 1,000 years and has survived internal turmoil, foreign and civil wars to become an important historical landmark, cultural center and religious draw for thousands of pilgrims annually.

For any visitor, touring the Benedictine abbey and Basilica while taking in the spectacular views is well worth the trip.

Then there's all the magic and splendor of Barcelona nearby — and the island delights of sunny Mallorca when it's time for some relaxing beach time!
