Worried that you’ll be unprepared for a zombie apocalypse? No need to fear that humanity will come to an end; the US federal government has a contingency plan in place for the unlikely event of a zombie invasion.
Foreign Policy details the US Military’s defense strategy to “preserve the sanctity of human life” among all the “non-zombie humans.” This zombie survival plan was reportedly found on a secret computer network as an unclassified document. While this plan, known as “Counter-Zombie Dominance” or CONOP 8888, might seem like a hoax, it was dated April 30, 2011 and included a disclaimer section that stated, “this plan was not actually designed as a joke.”
Now are you more worried about the judgment of our country’s Department of Defense than you are the threat of flesh-eating undead? Foreign Policy magazine states that Navy Capt. Pamela Kunze, a spokeswoman for Strategic Command, assures this plan is not a US Strategic Command plan, but only a creative training tool. Phew.
“The document is identified as a training tool used in an in-house training exercise where students learn about the basic concepts of military plans and order development through a fictional training scenario,” Zunze further explains.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of zombie contingency plans not coming from The Walking Dead plotlines. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a zombie preparedness guide, which suggests preparing an emergency kit including canned goods, radio, and bottled water to get you by until you can find a zombie-free refugee camp.
We can’t blame them. As savvy travelers, our list of emergency scenarios to prepare for also includes zombies rising from the dead and taking over civilization as we know it. In our TRAVEL 911 web series, we explain how to protect your family in a zombie apocalypse with a zombie shelter and even how to slow a zombie down (hit them in the mid-section and then run like hell).
And if you really want to be prepared for the day after, sign up for zombie survival camp.
