While narrowing down the picks for Travel’s Best All-American Vacations 2015, you start to face facts: Our nation is both vast and wonderfully diverse, home to stunning white-sand deserts, towering redwood forests, snowcapped mountains and charming seaside towns. With so many natural wonders and man-made institutions, it’s impossible to distill the American experience into a single list. Each year, we try to show off the wealth of destinations that make it the US without repeating former picks such the Dakotas’ Black Hills and the island of Nantucket, MA.

Before you plan your family trip to an amusement or water park, we thought you’d be interested to see which ones made our list of Travel’s Best Amusement and Water Parks 2015. We recruited 5 advisors — including Travel Channel TV host Bert Kreischer, theme-park reviewer Arthur Levine and family travel expert Erin Gifford — to help us choose the best family-friendly theme parks to visit this summer.
This particular Travel’s Best list is always hard to narrow down to 10, so we decided to share a few parks that didn’t make the cut but still deserve honorable mentions.
As you can imagine, there was much deliberation over our inaugural list of Travel’s Best Wonders of the World. Given all of the man-made and natural wonders found on this Earth, how could we possibly narrow it down to just 7? In the end, our experts settled on a well-rounded list encompassing sacred temples and colorful phenomena that can be seen from space.
So what just missed the cut?
