ALL POSTS IN [TV Shows]

Staycationers and vacationers alike, rejoice! This weekend, Travel Channel premieres Extreme Waterparks and Insane Coaster Wars, in addition to our summer lineup that includes Trip Flip with Bert Kreischer, which premiered last week and Top Spot, starting next week.

These shows might be too adrenaline-pumping for certain New York Times’ writers, but for those of us looking for a vicarious thrill and perhaps some ideas for our next thrill-seeking adventure, it sounds like the perfect way to spend a Sunday night. Insane Coaster Wars will pit the best and scariest rollercoasters against each other in categories like “G-force Giants” and “Speed Demons,” while Xtreme Waterparks will give viewers a peek at the world’s craziest water attractions.

As far as we’re concerned, journalist Neil Genzlinger’s idea for “Insanely Xtreme Top Shot” sounds pretty entertaining, but we wouldn’t recommend shooting rabbits with a hose or attempting to make a waterslide on your roof. So instead watch videos of insane coasters and extreme waterparks to prepare yourself before buckling down for the jaw-dropping premieres.

Catch double episodes this Sunday, July 8th, of both Xtreme Waterparks at 8|7c followed by Insane Coaster Wars at 9|8c.

Have you been keeping up with the Kardashians? (Don’t worry, we won’t judge.) If you’ve given in to the guilty pleasure like we have, you know America’s favorite love-to-hate-them family recently took a trip to the Dominican Republic. Now you can replicate the K family’s trip — even without a Kardashian-sized budget. READ MORE

Chances are if you’re reading this you tuned into last night’s Bachelorette premiere (or at least DVR’d it), to see if single mom Emily Maynard will finally find true love. Here at Travel we’re not wondering who will win her heart so much as where she will fall in love.

Charlotte, NC

For the first time ever the show has been moved from the “Bachelor pad” in Los Angeles to a Southern mansion in Maynard’s hometown of Charlotte, NC, so she could spend as much time with daughter Ricki as possible. Maynard was engaged to NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick who died in a 2004 plane crash while she was pregnant with their child. READ MORE

black-dhalia

The bright lights of Tinseltown have lured their share of young women. Among them was a raven-haired girl from Massachusetts who hoped to make it big in Los Angeles. But in the end, Elizabeth Short came to be known as the tragic Black Dahlia. In tonight’s episode of Hidden City: Los Angeles, at 10|9c, host Marcus Sakey explores Short’s mysterious death, which culminated in the gruesome discovery of her mutilated body in a vacant lot in 1947.

Sadly, Short was hardly the only woman whose life ended young — and, in several cases, under mysterious circumstances. Call it the Black Dahlia Club. If you’re planning a trip to Los Angeles, take a detour down these haunted streets; echoes of lives cut short still resound (hat tip: Esotouric and photographer Derek Hutchison): READ MORE

Real Pirates of the High Seas

The mere mention of the word “pirate” can spark images of fantasy and adventure. You know, Johnny Depp aka Captain Jack Sparrow. But in life, pirates don’t just flash smoky eyes and put on a good show. They kill. For real.  Tonight at 9/8c, Mysteries at the Museum offers a heart-stopping look at one high-seas drama.

In April 2009, the Maersk Alabama cargo ship was sailing through the Indian Ocean when it was hijacked by a speedboat with 3 Somali pirates onboard. In the  moments that followed, Captain Richard Phillips was tied up, with an AK-47 assault rifle held to the back of his head. Hear host Don Wildman explain what happened next.

In other cases, it’s travelers who end up in the crossfire. This year an American couple saw their sailboat hijacked by pirates several hundred miles off the coast of Oman. But if you dream of one day setting sail for the high seas, don’t fret. Just be smart about it. Stay current on high-risk waters and travel advisory warnings.

And if you’re looking for pirate adventure (safely tucked in the past), plenty of options await — just check out the links below.

Marilyn Monroe

Tonight at 9/8c, Mysteries at the Museum, examines the death of Marilyn Monroe, the blonde bombshell who still manages to fascinate the world nearly 50 years after her death. Her story may have been one of high glamour, but it was also universally relatable. Marilyn was “seeking the oldest of rainbows — to be herself and unafraid,” as director John Huston once put it. That may explain why some 40 books have been written about her. And dozens of actresses have played her. The latest is Michelle Williams, whose turn as MM in My Week With Marilyn, is already generating Oscar buzz.

But for all the focus on Marilyn “the lost girl,” another part of her story remains equally fascinating: the circumstances surrounding her death. In tonight’s episode of Mysteries at the Museum, host Don Wildman explores some very unsettling questions. Like, what exactly was Marilyn Monroe’s housekeeper doing on the night Marilyn died? And whatever happened to Marilyn’s diary-gone-missing? (The one in which she probably had a thing or 2 to say about the Kennedy brothers.) Did Marilyn simply die from an overdose? Or did she know too much?

Check out our sneak peak for clues and tune in tonight for Mysteries at the Museum at 9/8c to find out more.

Andrew Zimmern on TMZ

Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern recently received some on-camera love from TMZ in New York City. A TMZ crew was in Soho waiting for Sandra Bullock to make an appearance for the paparazzi. Well, they didn’t get Sandra, but they were able to chat with Andrew. It was definitely a funny TMZ segment.

Andrew was in New York City to shoot a segment for The Rachel Ray Show. He talked to Rachel about being a homeless drug addict living in the Big Apple. It’s a side of the Travel Channel host we don’t normally see. Watch the candid segment, and get the details on how you can join Andrew, Travel Channel and the 100,000 Homes Campaign help end homelessness.

Travel Channel Skit on Saturday Night Live featuring Russell Brand

In case you missed it, Travel Channel recently received some unexpected recognition on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. The comedy show featured a skit about Travel Channel’s Ultimate Vacation Giveaway.  The fictitious giveaway made for great fun and fodder, featuring British actor Russell Brand and SNL comedienne Kristen Wiig.

Other SNL cast members made brief appearances during the performance to demonstrate their excitement after winning the giveaway. Take a look at the skit and tell us what you think.

And don’t forget about the real Travel Channel Sweepstakes! In February, you can enter to win a trip for 2 to Greece. It’s a different, exciting destination each month. Good luck!
