As Francis Scott Key watched the smoke clear and the sun rise above Baltimore’s Fort McHenry after witnessing its bombardment by British naval ships during the final months of the War of 1812, he had every expectation of seeing a white flag of surrender. To his surprise, he saw the tattered, but still flying, remains of an oversized American flag that had been commissioned just months earlier by the fort’s commander Major George Armistead.
Key was so moved by the by sight of the flag and by the Americans’ protection of their fort that he penned the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry.” That poem, eventually set to music and renamed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” became the national anthem of the United States of America. READ MORE

Brony: An adult or teenager, often male and college-age (or older), who is a fan of the cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic — a show about pretty, magical ponies who fight evil. Seriously.
In 2011, the very first BronyCon was held in New York City with 100 bronies in attendance. The convention hopped around the city, holding 3 more events complete with visits from the voice actors and dance parties, until reaching 3,000 attendees in 2012. And today marks the first day and a new city for this army of bronies, with attendance expected to be 6,000 brony-strong.
Get excited, Baltimore! Or should I say, Baltimare …
The Baltimore Convention Center, a picturesque location on the harbor for these My Little Pony fans, will be hosting the event all weekend. From the “Mane Events Hall” to the “Portal to Equestria,” there will be videogame tournaments, lectures on voice acting and discourses analyzing the culture of My Little Pony.
Not yet convinced? Head to the Hall of the Moon for a class on drawing ponies. Or visit the Salt Block Lounge for the Brony Karaoke Smackdown.
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a bro to enjoy the pony festivities. Girls are welcome, too. Need a little help navigating the city? Check out our Baltimore travel guide for tips!

Conjure everything you know about Baltimore (camp, mediocre dining and The Wire) and throw it out the window. Baltimore is burgeoning as a luxury destination, thanks to the new Four Seasons Baltimore, which is spurring a new kind of scene for affluent travelers. In fact, visitors are bypassing neighbors DC and Philly to ride this new wave of change in Baltimore’s trendy Harbor East neighborhood.
- Four Seasons Baltimore
While the 256-room Four Seasons officially opened in February 2012, it finally rolled out all of its amenities last week, including the Splash Terrace, which includes a heated, 121-foot infinity pool, a wrap-around deck and the Splash Pool Bar & Grill. The hotel flaunts commanding views of the harbor, and the second-story outdoor level offers cabana rentals and an outdoor hot tub. This is the first hotel in the area to offer an outdoor, urban oasis. Further relaxation can be found at the decadent spa — the VIP treatment room even has its own outdoor deck. READ MORE
