Spring Break Destinations

College students knee-deep in papers, projects — and, in some places, snow — can take solace in the knowledge that spring break is just around the corner. But before you end up spending your precious vacation in a hotel room updating your Facebook status with rainy-day laments, you’d better check the weather forecast. Never fear,  weathertrends360 to the rescue! Start packing your sunglasses, sunblock and lax pinnies, because the experts in long-term forecasting have selected the best spring break destinations for the month of March:

FIRST WEEK OF MARCH

Cancun, Mexico: If you want to visit this popular spring break destination, you’d better do it sooner rather than later. The first week of March will be warm and sunny, while the end of the month is expected to be cloudy and rainy. Check out our video to see what makes Cancun an infamous spring break spot.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: 2013 is great year to spend your spring break in the Dominican Republic – the temperatures will be the warmest in 3 years. The first week of the month will have the best weather, but you may also get a sun-filled trip during the last week of the month.

Barbados: Like the Dominican Republic, temperatures in March will be the warmest in 3 years, and the first week will be the driest of the month.

FIRST HALF OF MARCH

South Padre Island, Texas: The first half of March will have the best and driest weather in this south Texas town. Book your trip today and you’ll be partying on South Padre Island before you know it.

Miami Beach, Florida: March is a great time to visit Florida — the temperatures are comfortable, and hurricane season is still several months away. The first half of March 2013 will be the best time to visit, as it will be driest part of the month.

Montego Bay, Jamaica: The warm and dry weather during the first half of March will make it a great time to visit the small island nation of Jamaica. It’s expected to be the warmest March in 6 years.

SECOND HALF OF MARCH

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: Book your trip later in March for the warmest and driest weather.

Las Vegas, Nevada: Sure, Las Vegas is in the desert, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that means it’s bikini weather all the time! If you’re headed to Sin City for your spring break, book your trip later in March for the warmest weather.

ANYTIME

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico:  There really isn’t a bad time to visit Puerto Vallarta in March. It’s expected to be warm and sunny throughout the month.

Acapulco, Mexico: Travel a bit farther south to Acapulco, where sunshine and warmth await all month long.

Each year, devoted fans of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition wait in anticipation of who will grace the magazine’s cover. Will it be Kate Upton again, or someone else? For us, the excitement goes far beyond the question of who will grace the cover. For 2013, the magazine took its production to 7 continents — and 17 wonders of the world — crisscrossing the globe from Easter Island to Africa. This year’s edition also included the first fashion shoot to take place on the ice-covered terrain of Antarctica. And Travel Channel has the pleasure of airing the 1-hour special Sports Illustrated®: The Making of Swimsuit ’13 – 7 Continents, 17 Wonders, on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 8|7c.

See these beautiful destinations for yourself in our Sports Illustrated 2013 Swimsuit Destinations slideshow. Plus, get the complete listing of hotels and world-renowned resorts that were the stunning backdrops for this year’s unprecedented production, in our SI Swimsuit 2013 Travel Guide.

If you’re anything like us, you were probably wondering where the Batcave is actually located (and if it’s a real place) as opposed to paying attention to the plot of Dark Knight Rises. We loved the movie, and we can’t help but be a little destination-obsessed here at Travel Channel. The Gotham City of Dark Knight was so obviously Chicago, that the new locations in Dark Knight Rises had us wondering, “Is that New York?” Turns out, most of it wasn’t.

To celebrate that extra day we’ve been granted this leap year, many travel destinations — from Orlando to South Africa – are trying to make those extra 24 hours worth your while. Instead of wasting away your leap day, let these 5 travel ideas inspire you to make the day something to remember.

One More Disney Day
For starters, Disney wants your leap day to be extra magical, so they are officially calling leap day, “One More Disney Day.” To commemorate the day, Magic Kingdom Park in Orlando’s Disney World and Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, will be open 24 hours straight. Once the gates open at 6 a.m. on Feb. 29, Mickey fans can have the run of the park until the rides shut down at 6 a.m. on March 1. The lines will probably be short in the wee hours of the morning, offering maximum opportunities to ride.

Leap at Martha’s Vineyard
If peace and quiet are more your speed, then head to Martha’s Vineyard for a little rest and relaxation. But don’t take yourself too seriously there; at the Vineyard Square Hotel you can score a free bottle of wine if you bring a photograph of yourself leaping over something. So let loose, find the closest leap-able object and bring someone who has a camera.
