Over the years, Las Vegas has evolved into a mecca for gambling, parties and entertainment. And since 1959, the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign has been a symbol for the city, greeting travelers as they arrive, and providing them with a memorable photo op.

This week, we’re throwing it back to the 1970s when a Vegas showgirl posed in front of the historic landmark on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Don’t forget to check back every week this month for our Vintage Summer Throwback Thursdays.

Wide-eyed. A little overwhelmed. And, admittedly, a bit dazzled. That sums up how I felt my first few hours in Las Vegas, on my first ever trip to Vegas. “You haven’t been to Vegas?!” most people exclaimed when I told them this was my first trip. It seems no one could believe that I’d reached my 30s without at least 1 rite-of-passage, wild weekend in Vegas. And maybe that’s why I hadn’t felt a need to check this city off my list before now – I felt I could go without visiting a city full of Hangover-style debauchery laced with cheesy tourist traps. While I did find these things in Vegas, I surprisingly learned that it’s also possible to have a sophisticated and unexpected weekend here, too.

So if you want a mix of class and whimsy and OK, a few adventurous drinks, follow my first-timer’s 48-hour itinerary for Vegas.

And tonight at 9|8c, on an all-new episode of Toy Hunter, Jordan and his assistant Julia head to Sin City in hopes of tracking down several vintage toys from the popular 1979 TV series, Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century.

What do Paris Hilton, Justin Bieber, Marilyn Manson and our own Zak Bagans all have in common? Apparently, a penchant for the truly horrific. All 3 have already visited horror movie director Eli Roth’s (of Hostel and Grindhouse) Goretorium – a brand-new year-round horror attraction that Paris Hilton has already declared “the scariest haunted house on Earth,” according to the Las Vegas Sun.

We’re not exactly sure that Ms. Hilton is the world’s leading authority on haunted houses, but it certainly does sound pretty gore-riffic. The attraction, which opened on Thursday right on the Las Vegas Strip near CityCenter, is designed to be a 1960s hotel run by serial-killer owners who perform strange, sadistic, bloody, tortuous acts on unsuspecting Vegas travelers — all this before killing them, putting them through a giant “meat grinder” and feeding them to other unsuspecting hotel guests. How does a superstar say goodbye to the single life? If you’re Justin Timberlake, just one bachelor destination won’t do — you start the weekend in Las Vegas and end it in Cabo San Lucas with a posse of your 25 closest pals.

There’s no word on his impending nuptials to actress Jessica Biel — in July she told the Chicago Sun-Times she’s done “almost nothing” for the big day — but perhaps they’re plotting a secret wedding like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds?

Here’s what the weekend entailed:

Las Vegas

*Things kicked off with dinner Thursday night at Wynn Las Vegas’ Sinatra, an Italian restaurant featuring the infamous ladies’ man Frank Sinatra. Timberlake and his crew got into the theme “decked out in suits, a la the Rat Pack,” according to People.com.
*After dinner they headed to 60,000-square-foot Surrender Nightclub, where JT sipped on his 901 Tequila and hung out in a private outdoor cabana while some of his buddies stripped down to their swim trunks to take advantage of the private infinity pool.
*Rounding out their night in Sin City, the group’s last stop was at Wynn’s Tryst Nightclub.
